Secure and Optimize Your Web Applications

By Luke Babarinde

Given the rate at which we continue to see cyber attacks, it is obvious that there is still a wide gap in how security controls are implemented for web applications. I have been experimenting with number of solutions to help me solve this problem to not only secure but to also optimize HTTP requests to a web server.

Here is a used case that describes a problem I faced with a fan forum website when I was consulted to help to help improve security and performance. The website is based on vBulletin engine and running under Linux Apache MySql and PHP (LAMP).

Here goes…

Problem 1 – Security

Documented issues of persistent Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, especially SYN flood. Given the nature of the attack, implementing iptables was simply not enough. Every couple of months, the site would be down again. Due to limited resources, I had to implement new set of controls to that would go beyond functions of a conventional firewall.

Problem 2 – Performance

The site had performance issues with a hook called Shoutbox, which allowed members to chat in real time using HTTP post requests. This is usually alright until you have high volume of users. At that point, Shoutbox can cripple the CPU as requests are passed between the database and back to the hard-drive and presented to the user.

Solution

Solution to Problem 1: Web Application Firewall – ModSecurity

An hybrid firewall of protocol sensitive application Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is needed – Web Application Firewall. The conventional Firewall that sits at the perimeter with port 80 wide open to the world is no longer sufficient as attacks such as SQL Injection, Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and Cross Site Request Forgery (XSRF) or HTTP DoS attacks.

What can I get that is cost effective without compromising on the objectives of providing in-depth security controls by addressing all forms of attacks as I listed above? – ModSecurity

ModSecurity is a Web Application Firewall (WAF) from Trustwave SpiderLabs that filters both incoming and outgoing data and able to stop malicious traffic by using set of predefined rules.

Wireless Adds A New Dimension To Home Theater Systems

By Lance Peterson

Wireless technology has made its’ way into modern home theater systems. From televisions, to video game systems, to surround sound speakers, wireless innovations have expanded the options for consumers to enjoy their music, TV and games through wireless connections. Depending on the type of devices you have, you can extend the reach of your entertainment system far beyond the limits of wired connections.

Listening Options Abound

With the integration of wireless routers into traditional home theater setups, many more devices can now stream and play back through a person’s entertainment system. Televisions can connect and display content from the web. Many game systems have WiFi connections that allow players to wirelessly connect to the internet, play games with friends across the world and have it all booming through their wireless speaker system. You can also enjoy digital surround sound, HD video content and Blu-ray video through this setup.

It Starts With One Component

At the center of it all is the modern surround sound amplifier / receiver. Imagine sitting on your couch with your smart phone, tablet device or your laptop. You begin playing your favorite song right from any of these devices, through your media center setup with the touch of a button. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliant devices allow you to play your music, podcasts or other sounds from anywhere in your home, directly through your home theater. Individual manufacturers have also jumped into the fray. They have begun developing proprietary based standards and systems that allow consumers to connect their mobile devices wirelessly to home media centers for quick and seamless play back.

Wireless Speakers…Really?

That leaves the home theater speakers as one of the final components to take advantage of wireless technology. You can get sound to your rear speakers in your surround sound system without the need to run wires along your floor or under the base boards. By using a simple wireless transmitter / receiver system, you can have a neat and tidy setup, and still enjoy the richness of surround sound audio. The transmitter is hardwired to your surround sound amplifier. It uses radio frequency (RF) communication to transmit the sound without wires to the receiver device, and the receiver distributes the sound to the left and right rear surround speakers.

Although the rear speakers are connected to the receiver device with short wires, they can be easily tucked away and no one will know how you’ve gotten surround sound without wires showing everywhere.

Summary

It’s clear that wireless technology is here to stay for home theaters. More and more vendors are creating software, devices and systems that will transform the way we enjoy our entertainment. From wireless components to wireless speakers, you can expect to have growing home audio and video options in the years to come.

Web Technology in the Next 5 Years

By Matt A Creason

1. Magazines in a more interactive format

Some experts question whether or not a majority of print magazines will be around in the next 5 years. Each week it seems another magazine closes. With mobile devices and social media fully capable of delivering great content while we’re on the go what niches do magazines serve? That doesn’t mean we won’t have magazines in the next five years, just that the majority of them will be online.

There is a certain audience that still likes to have the printed material in their hands but as there is more of a demand for digital and mobile material it doesn’t add up, from a cost perspective, to keep printing the magazines when it’s cheaper to produce them in an interactive format.

2. Social Media will continue to progress and get bigger

Some believe social media has gone about as far as it can go and others think it’s still in its infancy. I think there’s still room to grow and progress. Niche social networks will continue to grow. For just about every niche you can think of there’s a social network for it and if there isn’t you can expect there will be in the future. Many organizations and corporations are setting up social networking sites for their clients. Some have succeeded and others have failed. Either way there is still a lot of room for improvement with the future of social media and how they relate to companies and organizations.

More companies are thinking about how to leverage and implement Facebook, Twitter and YouTube into their corporate social media presence. Some predict that your Facebook ID will become as important as your driver’s license or social security information.

Companies that embrace these social media platforms will have a better understanding of how to meet their customer’s needs. There’s a company called Radian6, which is an industry leader in social media monitoring, measurement, and engagement that allows you to listen and follow all your customer’s social media platforms. It allows you to monitor, measure and engage your customers with what they are saying and how to apply the information to make your business more successful. If you have insight into what your customer’s needs are, you will have a better opportunity to be successful in striving to meet those needs.

3. Web-based Operating Systems will be more prominent

While our computers will still store files on our local systems, it is predicted that our operating systems will increasingly rely on Web-based files. Google’s Chrome OS seems to be the first serious contender. For desktop computers and laptops it will take a bit longer to fully transition to a web-based operating system mainly because users run more robust apps and programs, such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. which will take a bit longer to make fully functional online due to the amount of memory and speed which they need to operate.

4. More Online “TV” Programs

Online series and programs have gained wide viewership in the last 1 – 2 years. Webisodes have also grown in popularity, which are mini-episodes of popular TV shows that are aired exclusively online. Several informative video blogs have been in production for a while, such as TreeHugger TV and CNET TV.

With video technology becoming increasingly cheaper and easier to use as well as broadband Internet access becoming more widespread, high-quality, Internet-only programs will become more prevalent in the next five years.

Even now we can hook up our computers and our gaming devices to our TV’s and watch online programs as well as streaming them through out TV. With Youtube, Hulu, Netflix and iTunes gaining increased popularity, online TV programs will continue to increase.

I know this doesn’t really have anything to do with printing, but I thought it was cool anyway!

Application:

QR codes, PURL’s (Personalized URL’s) and mobile marketing will need to be implemented by printing companies to stay with the times and be competitive. For printers, getting involved in and selling marketing services such as e-newsletters, web development, personalized URLS’s and social media services to their clients will be key to being competitive. Since the printer already helps deliver the marketing message for the client, the easy transition is to be able to have the printer take care of the marketing side as well. Having these services available may be critical to their future success.
